Big Rulings by Supreme Court for the Week

Yesterday, the Supreme Court upheld the Obamacare law that subsidies are legal in "all" states.   Today, the Supreme Court declares same-sex marriage legal in all 50 states.

The Supreme Court declared Friday that same-sex couples have a right to marry anywhere in the United States. Gay and lesbian couples already could marry in 36 states and the District of Columbia. The court's 5-4 ruling means the remaining 14 states, in the South and Midwest, will have to stop enforcing their bans on same-sex marriage.
Many large employers and government entities, have already taken action steps and have implemented same sex marriage guidelines within their organization.  For small to medium size employees, it means confusion and are unclear as to how they will proceed.  As a Strategic HR Advisor, Hamilton Edwards will work with our clients to make sure they are compliant with all HR and ACA guidelines.   This includes updating employee handbooks, benefit plan documents, along with providing training support and advice on how to comply with today's ruling.
For those companies that feel this will go against their religious beliefs, you may want to talk to an HR attorney or one of our HR consultants to make sure you understand the impact of the law along with the liability of non compliance.
